What is a bioswale?

A bioswale is a landscaped, vegetated drainage channel designed to slow, filter, and absorb stormwater runoff. By combining plants, soil, and gravel in a shallow, gently sloped trench, bioswales naturally clean runoff, reduce flood peaks, and recharge groundwater while simultaneously improving streetscapes and urban biodiversity.

How a Bioswale Works

Rainwater or surface runoff flows into the bioswale channel. As water moves slowly through the vegetation and engineered soil, suspended solids settle out, pollutants are filtered by plant roots and soil microbes, and water gradually infiltrates into the ground below. Any excess flow continues along the channel to a downstream outlet or overflow drain.

Bioswale Components

• Vegetated channel: Grass, shrubs, or wetland plants that slow and filter water
• Engineered soil layer: Sandy or loamy mix that promotes infiltration and filtration
• Gravel sub-base: Provides drainage and storage for infiltrating water
• Check dams: Small berms within the channel that slow water flow and encourage pooling
• Overflow structure: Safety outlet for heavy rainfall events
