What is a video door phone?

A video door phone (VDP) is an intercom system that allows a homeowner to see and speak with a visitor at the front door through a display unit inside the home and a camera/speaker unit outside. Unlike a smart doorbell, a VDP typically operates on a dedicated wired network rather than Wi-Fi.

How a Video Door Phone Works

When a visitor presses the outdoor call button, the indoor monitor displays a live video feed and emits a ringtone. The resident can speak to the visitor and remotely unlock the door without moving from their location inside the home.

VDP vs Smart Doorbell

  • VDP: Wired, reliable, no internet needed, typically larger screen.
  • Smart Doorbell: Wireless, requires Wi-Fi, remote access anywhere via phone.
  • VDP: Better for apartments and gated communities with central control.
  • Smart Doorbell: Better for standalone homes with remote access needs.

Video door phones are a reliable and secure way to manage visitor access, especially in apartments and housing complexes. IP-based VDPs bridge the gap between traditional intercoms and modern smart doorbells.
