What is AMRUT scheme?

AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) is a centrally sponsored urban infrastructure development scheme launched in June 2015 to provide basic urban infrastructure services particularly water supply, sewerage, urban mobility, parks, and stormwater drainage to 500 select cities and towns across India.

Objectives of AMRUT

• Ensure every household has access to a tap connection for water supply
• Ensure every household has access to a sewerage connection
• Improve stormwater drainage to reduce urban flooding
• Increase green spaces and parks in cities
• Reduce pollution by switching to public transport and non-motorized mobility

AMRUT Coverage

• 500 cities and towns with population above 1 lakh
• All state capitals regardless of population
• Cities identified under HRIDAY (Heritage City Development) scheme
• 13 cities on the banks of major rivers
• Cities from hill states, islands, and tourist destinations

AMRUT addresses the most fundamental urban service gaps that have historically made Indian cities difficult to live in. By ensuring that every household has access to piped water and sewerage, AMRUT is laying the invisible infrastructure upon which healthy, liveable, and investable cities can be built making it one of the most consequential urban programmes for India's real estate market.
