What is permeable paving?

Permeable paving also called porous or pervious paving is a type of surface material that allows rainwater to pass through it and infiltrate into the ground below, rather than running off the surface into storm drains.

Types of Permeable Paving

  • Pervious Concrete: Open-graded concrete mix with 15–25% void space; allows high water infiltration rates
  • Porous Asphalt: Similar principle to pervious concrete using bituminous mix
  • Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavers (PICP): Concrete units with aggregate-filled joints
  • Grass and Gravel Pavers: Plastic or concrete grid systems filled with grass or gravel; suitable for low-traffic areas
  • Resin-Bound Aggregate: Natural aggregate bound with polyurethane resin on a permeable sub-base

Applications in Real Estate

  • Parking lots, driveways, and access roads
  • Footpaths, plazas, and pedestrian areas
  • Courtyards, terraces, and podium areas in residential complexes
  • Fire access lanes and low-speed roads

Permeable paving is a simple yet highly effective urban drainage solution that addresses some of India's most pressing urban challenges waterlogging, groundwater depletion, and stormwater pollution.
