What is the difference between POP and gypsum ceiling?

POP (Plaster of Paris) and gypsum board are both widely used materials for false ceilings in Indian homes, but they differ in composition, application method, durability, and design flexibility. Gypsum boards are factory-made panels fixed to a metal frame, while POP is a wet plaster applied manually by skilled workers.

POP (Plaster of Paris) Ceiling

  • Applied as a wet paste and shaped on-site by craftsmen
  • Ideal for ornate, intricate designs and cornices
  • Takes longer to dry and requires skilled labour
  • Prone to cracking over time if not done well
  • Cost: ₹50–₹90 per sq. ft.
  • Heavier than gypsum not ideal for all structures

Gypsum Board Ceiling

  • Pre-fabricated boards screwed onto a metal grid framework
  • Faster installation less site mess and drying time
  • Smoother, more uniform finish
  • Lightweight and fire-resistant
  • Easier to repair individual boards can be replaced
  • Cost: ₹60–₹100 per sq. ft.

Both POP and gypsum ceilings are effective choices, but gypsum is increasingly preferred for its speed, consistency, and ease of maintenance. POP remains the go-to for decorative detailing and traditional design styles.
