What is Zigbee in smart home devices?

Zigbee is a low-power, short-range wireless communication protocol widely used in smart home devices.

How Zigbee Works

Zigbee devices form a mesh network each device acts as a node that can forward signals from other devices. A Zigbee coordinator (usually a hub) bridges the network to your home's Wi-Fi router. This makes the network more robust and extends range across large homes.

Zigbee Advantages

  • Low Power Consumption: Ideal for battery-operated sensors and switches.
  • Mesh Networking: Devices extend the network range automatically.

Zigbee Disadvantages

  • Requires a Zigbee-compatible hub (e.g., SmartThings, Philips Hue Bridge).
  • Not natively Wi-Fi; needs a bridge to integrate with apps.
  • Some compatibility issues between Zigbee brands (being resolved by Matter).

Zigbee remains one of the most reliable and power-efficient protocols for smart home devices. It is especially suited for large homes requiring many sensors and switches on a stable, low-power mesh network.
