What is a false ceiling?

A false ceiling, also known as a drop ceiling or suspended ceiling, is a secondary ceiling installed below the original structural ceiling of a room. It is used to enhance aesthetics, conceal wiring and ducts, improve acoustics, and create a layered lighting effect.

Common Materials Used

  • Gypsum board: Most popular — smooth finish, fire-resistant, lightweight
  • POP (Plaster of Paris): Traditional option, allows intricate moulding designs
  • PVC panels: Moisture-resistant, ideal for bathrooms and kitchens
  • Wooden planks: Warm aesthetic, suited for bedrooms and lounges
  • Metal tiles: Modern industrial look, used in offices and commercial spaces

Benefits of False Ceilings

  • Hides unsightly electrical wiring, pipes, and AC ducts
  • Enhances room aesthetics with cove lighting, recessed lights, and cornices
  • Improves thermal insulation reduces heat transfer from the roof
  • Better acoustics reduces echo and noise in rooms
  • Allows for zoned or layered lighting design

False ceilings are one of the most impactful interior design elements, transforming a plain slab roof into a design feature. Whether for aesthetics, functionality, or both, they are a standard part of most modern home interiors in India.
